He crept back, and back, into a dark corner of the ship away from the retreating refugees and the fight. He cloaked himself, blocked out the crying Asgardians, the deafening roar of the Hulk, the clang of weapons, and reached as far into himself as he could.
Beyond the remnants of himself that had been shredded to pieces in the past ten years. Beyond the loss of Asgard, and Odin, and Frigga, and his death on Svartalfheim, the attack on New York, his time with Thanos and his children in the Sanctuary, the death of Laufey, the ruined coronation, the long years of Odin pitting them against each other in a rigged competition, all the way back to the beginning.
He thought of his mother, and of Thor, the two halves of his very beating heart, and used all his strength to pull together an illusion of himself so real even Thanos would be fooled.
