The spirits tend to like the simplest path and can be prettily easily swayed one way or another, so I would imagine that if someone tried to make a decent argument against you then the spirits would just give up and go with what they said.

I could imagine that specific example essentially functioning as some kind of weird self-gainsaying. You said a thing AND called it out on yourself in one go! Either the thing or the self-callout is wrong, and either way you take a little hit.
