"What do you want from me?" Alex bursts out, her chest suddenly heaving and voice much louder than either of them anticipated—that is, if the way Alex immediately flinches back is any indication. The desperation in her voice makes Casey pause, realizing the question isn't what it sounds like. "What do you mean?" Casey asks slowly, controlled in the face of Alex's outburst, as she searches her face for any indication of what she's looking for.
