“You don’t use magic much,” Harriet said softly.
“Not for everything,” Sevrina replied, her back to her. “I prefer doing things with my hands, when I can. It reminds me I’m not just a wand. Or a weapon.”
Harriet rose from her seat, walked toward her. “You’re not.”
Sevrina turned slightly at that, and for the first time that evening, her expression cracked just faintly. A flicker of something raw behind the eyes.
“I used to think I was only what I’d done. What I’d survived. But now...” She looked down at the dish in her hand. “Now I’m trying to be something else.”
