Grief had always been dangerous. To mourn too strongly for the loss of a loved one would mean to contract the Hanahaki, a disease that was often fatal. There were ways to survive. There had been breakthroughs in medical science. If people allowed themselves to mourn and get over their loss, the Hanahaki would fade away. But that wasn't the only option. As Doctors worked hard on a vaccine, a way to stop the Hanahaki before it could ever grow within them, people were excited to rid themselves of the fear of grief. They had no idea taking the vaccine would turn them into monsters.
Victor Nikiforov hadn't taken the vaccine, but he was still dying. The seeds of Hanahaki had begun to grow. His grief was going to destroy him.
