Thor's coronation is in a week, and Loki is desperate to keep his block-headed brother from the throne. Committing treason seems a step far, however, so he makes a decision. He'll use a spell to look into the future. If Thor's reign is a disaster, he'll go ahead with his plan. If by some miracle everything is fine, then he'll let Thor be crowned.The future is not what he expected. For one thing, Thor thinks he's a hallucination. And that's just the start.
