Disciple Shen Jiu has been clawing his way to the top of Qing Jing Peak for a decade, to little result. He is reviled, spiritually stunted, and, above all, exhausted beyond measure. When a solo night hunt proves more dangerous than anticipated, Shen Jiu is saved from the brink of death by a snake demon with a strange offer: to spend his season with it and incubate its eggs, an ordeal that has the possibility of healing his long-damaged meridians.
