This fazed me; I did not think he was being serious but quick as a flash I replied, “I don’t know if I’m stupid enough to be an officer, ha-ha-ha.”
Well, you could have heard a pin drop. There was total silence as the faux pas dawned on me. Joe’s jaw had dropped and he was looking at me as if to say, “You idiot.”
After a long pause, the major replied, “And I don’t know if I’m clever enough to put you on a charge.” (c)
