Luke has never been good at expressing his feelings.
He's used to being alone and being in a band makes that quite hard.
So when Luke starts to develop feelings for his bandmate Ashton he feels he has no other option other than to suppress his feelings and drink them away, unfortunately he picks up another habit as well.
