They hadn't wanted to get married in the first place, but they really hadn't wanted to be imprisoned. So on a sunny day at the start of June they chose the lesser of two evils. Then at some point, between yearly liaisons to maintain their marriage status and bringing two children into the world, they became friends. Until the law is overturned and they're left divorced from someone they never shared their feelings with in the first place.
