Harry and Severus took on the roles of the gods of life and rebirth (otherwise known as death) after their human lives ended. Twenty-thousand years later, Earth is known as Gaia, inborn magic is a relic of the past, and the entire fate of the world rests on the small shoulders of their teenaged vessels: Cloud Strife, vessel of Life, and Sephiroth, vessel of Rebirth. They lost the battle once, when Jenova destroyed it all. This time, Severus and Harry have come back as humans too.
