“Chloe,” Max began, slowly, as if scared to startle her, “maybe we should pull off the night?” Max paused, then tried her best to put on a teasing tone. “It’s late and you’re going to need your energy once we reach the city, Seattle traffic is not for the weak.” Her voice waivered on the last word and she knew her attempt at humor wasn’t the most convincing. Still, it earned a small half-smile from Chloe.
 
“We’ll pull over at the next motel,” Chloe replied, glancing at Max out of the corner of her eye.
