Astoria Greengrass was born with an expiration date and a sense of humor about it, which, frankly, seemed like the more useful inheritance.
She spent her childhood being cursed like a fairy tale princess, her adolescence pretending not to notice her sister quietly falling apart from all the noticing, and one entire war being politely, guiltily safe in France. She fell in love twice before it counted. Buried one of them before she was twenty.
And then a boy she used to think was unbearably loud sat down across from her, said almost nothing worth remembering, and somehow never left.
This is not a story about being saved. Nobody gets saved. This is a story about a girl who decided, several times, against considerable evidence, to be happy anyway — and about the one person who showed up often enough that she let him watch.
Cross my heart, and hope to die — she did. Eventually. She had a wonderful time first.
