This is the tale of a year in the life of Sarge’s person, AKA James Buchanan Barnes, as he tries to recover from everything that’s happened to him over the past eighty years. During that time, he is forced to deal with bad therapists, people with their own agendas, memories he doesn’t want, horrible losses from his past and almost insurmountable odds.
But this is also the story of all the crazy people Bucky meets along the way, who help him when he’s at his lowest, point him in the right direction when he feels lost, make him laugh, grow to love him for who he is, and most importantly, give him hope when he needs it most.
It’s a long and difficult journey, as Bucky works not just to let go of his past, but to also rebuild his own identity and a future for himself. And with Sarge at his side, Bucky slowly comes to realize that not everything he once loved is lost, and if he can just have enough faith in himself and those around him, he might, just might, get his very own happy ending.
Bucky IS Sarge’s person after all. As the once abandoned puppy Bucky saved one night from freezing to death, he knows, more than anyone, just how much Bucky deserves it.

This is my contribution to the 2019 Captain America Reverse Big Bang, and it would not have been possible if not for the support and encouragement of quite a few people.
First of all, I want to thank the Mods of this fest, not only for organizing everything, but for their endless support and encouragement. It seems as if I can’t write anything under 150K these days, and this story ended up getting away from me. When I emailed them with my concerns about not being to make my deadline, they were simultaneously supportive and flexible, and I can’t thank them enough for their patience and understanding. There are so many great works in this Big Bang, and that’s all thanks to them. Thank you so much. You were all an absolute pleasure to work with.
I need to give a shout out to my artist, the lovely TT_Angst_Queen. Their art was the inspiration for this story, and they were both very kind and supportive to work with. I didn’t quite manage to work in all the things you asked for, but if nothing else, I hope this story makes you smile.
I also need to once again thank my friend Katheryne. I had a bit of a rough go of it writing this story, and once again she was nothing but an endless source of support, encouragement and laughter. Just…don’t ever tell her you’re about to write a sex scene. She will send you an endless stream of PMs that make you laugh so hard you won’t be able to stop for hours. **hugs to you though** You know I adore you.
Lastly, there is the ever amazing Merry_rf. There is no better beta in the world, and when I once again emailed Merry chunks of what ended up being yet ANOTHER huge fic, they yet again worked their magic, red-penned all of my horrible grammar and abuse of commas, and turned this story into something cohesive. Merry is a dream to work with, and I could never thank them enough. The only complaint I still have is that Merry lives so far away, because seriously, we need to share a couple of beers and giggle about our boys. You’re one of my favorite people in the world, and if ever given the chance, I’m gonna hug the stuffing out of you.
With that said, this is a long one. I’ll be posting it in several chapters over the next few weeks. Comments are GREATLY appreciated, and always bring a smile to this crazy Stucky fan’s face. I hope you enjoy Bucky’s adventures with his dog. =)
