Magic resonated with the natural.
Once, magic flowed through all of the world. Every plant, animal and person; the seas, mountains and the sky; they all served as conduits between the physical realm and the magical plane. However, with the arrival of the industrial revolution came a massive influx of unnatural forces. Chemicals and pollutants flooded the world and strangled its connection to magic.
A self proclaimed Dark Lord, raised by muggles, corrupted the Old Ways for his own gain. A man revered by the masses as a Light Lord, raised by a muggle-born, banned the Old Ways as evil. A ministry striving only for its own gain under the guise of 'democracy' stripped power from the Old Houses.
The life-spans of Wixen grew shorter, and they had fewer children.
And amongst it all, a little boy in a cupboard under the stairs watched the battle between black taint and opal light.
