When Ron Weasley, new to fatherhood, finds himself overwhelmed and needs someone to take over his death eater case at the ministry, Hermione steps up to the plate quite gladly, as – after all – she learned during Antonin Dolohov's trial that the curse he sent her way in the Department of Mysteries was actually an effort to save her life. When she discovers that Antonin's vital signs are slipping while he lingers in house arrest, and that no one knows why, she sets out on a one-woman mission to save his life in return, just as he once did for her – a mission which is more complicated since he is no longer, strictly speaking, alive.

Over the course of her visits to the vampire's cottage, about which Antonin is initially belligerent, more questions will arise: what happened that caused Voldemort to turn Antonin over to a savage cabal of vampires? Why does he adamantly refuse to touch her, even after six months of budding closeness? And how long can the two of them stifle their growing need for one another?
