Why did such an affectionate person have such unromantic descendants, was the question that had occurred more than once to Wei Wuxian in his – highly ignorant – youth. After all, it was recorded in the official histories that the Lan sect founder, Lan An, was a monk who had returned to the world as a wandering musician, who found the fated person in his life, and set up the Lan sect with her. When her body failed and she returned to the heavens, he too left this world to follow her, leaving nothing behind save the legacy of their combined blood.
Wei Wuxian would beat himself up later for not considering the rest of the story – there were always two sides to create one family.
It just happens that one side of the Lan clan, apparently, was cursed.
