Steve is hurt. Bad. He needs help, and they can't go to a hospital. There is a mob hunting them. None of them trust the new military guy in charge. Vecna is a threat they can't yet beat.
Honestly, the lesser of said evils appears to be the Police and the parents. For the sake of saving Steve's life, they just have to risk it.
