Even at night, the city is well-lit by the soft light of the moon. From the Kazekage’s quarters, Gaara can see nearly to the ends of the village. He closes his eyes. He's needed by so many, now. An entire village relying on him to keep them safe. Was this not what he wanted? To be needed? Again, he was too hopeful. The reality is still far lonelier than he thought it would be.
He spots a head of spiky blonde hair on the balcony of a neighboring building. That foolish hope blossoms in his chest like a desert flower. Gaara is too weak to squash it underfoot. Surely the elders would not begrudge him a visit with a friend.
