| When Steve returns to his Brooklyn apartment as suddenly as he’d disappeared from it, all he can do is stare and blink into the middle distance for a while, his lips still tingling with the warm buzz of kissing Bucky Barnes, heat in his cheeks still blazing. I was just in another timeline, Steve thinks to himself, as his knees give out and he sits with a plop on his bed. Or another universe? ...>>He’s still not entirely sure what the appropriate terminology is. Or maybe he hadn’t actually visited another timeline/universe and he hadn’t seen a bunch of alternate versions of himself, all of them significantly more swole than he is, even the lady version. Maybe it had all just been a really vivid dream. Or maybe he’s had a psychotic break. Maybe there’s a gas leak in the apartment. That happens, right? Or maybe he really did meet the possible love of his life in another universe. Now it's time for Steve to find him in this one. [This is a side story to if I'm gonna get back to you someday, following the modern AU, non-serum version of Steve from the clusterfuck of Steves. It might not make much sense without having read that one first.] |

“Keys to Steve’s place in Brooklyn, and his motorcycle. Some records about his, ah, accounts and things. He—well, he hasn’t been declared officially dead, we can’t, you know, say anything about the time travel, but—” “He’s not coming back,” says Bucky, before Banner has to try to couch it softly, or spare Bucky’s assumed feelings. It’s a courtesy Bucky does...>>n’t need. His feelings have seemed very far away since Steve left. “I know.” "Yeah, so, uh, I just figured you should have all this." Bucky is doing fine after the Blip. He has his amends, he has his exit strategies, he goes to therapy. Steve's gone, but that's fine, Bucky can deal with that, even if he can't deal with feeling like a ghost in the apartment that Steve left behind. But when Steve returns, they'll both have to deal with how to rebuild a friendship and a home that are haunted by the ghosts of who they used to be. Their methods of doing so are perhaps less than ideal, what with how they involve more sex and stealthy surprise interior decoration than any actual communication. Maybe that's all they need to make a new home together. |

“What’s the plural for a group of Steves?” asks Natasha, and it’s weirdly comforting that the question has a hint of whimsical hysteria to it. Good, Bucky’s not the only one who’s not dealing well with all of this.
“A clusterfuck,” he says. “A clusterfuck of Steves.” Despite how little sense his life has made since he got on a battlefield to fight a bunch of aliens, Bucky's prett...>>y sure he knows exactly what's happened when a much older Steve appears after the mission to return the Infinity Stones: he left Bucky behind to get his much deserved happily ever after in the past. Only then another Steve shows up, and another. And Bucky realizes he still hasn't got any idea what's going on. What he does have is a whole lot of Steves, a fraught relationship with his own Steve, and tentative plans to leave. But the more Bucky talks to all these different versions of Steve, the more he begins to wonder if leaving really is what's best for him and his Steve, or if there's a way to make something new out of their long friendship. |

The beginnings of a plan took shape in Steve’s mind, as clear and simple as a tactical frontal assault. He’d prove to Bucky that this was it, he was staying: Steve was retired from the fighting game, Steve wasn’t going to let anything keep pulling them apart. Maybe then when Steve finally told him he loved him, Bucky would believe him.

Sacrificing his super soldier serum to use one of the Infinity Stones wasn't a problem either, not when it meant getting back the half of the universe they'd lost, and especially not when it meant getting Bucky back. But retirement and finally confessing his feelings for Bucky? Those were proving to be more challenging. |

Jack, this is Steve.” Steve looked at Sam a little wildly, expecting to see—he didn’t even know, but some reaction other than Sam’s usual easy friendliness. And there was something there, but it was just the twitch of Sam’s mouth that said he found something hilarious and he was trying not to show it. Was this Sam’s idea of a joke, or a prank?
