| The darkened woods around him suddenly burst open in dizzying white lights. Michelangelo is exposed to their glare, chasing away the shadows he has been taught to rely on so much. “There! I see it!” With a cry, Michelangelo tries to pull back into the safety of the night’s shadows. It proves to be an impossible task when humans are beginning to circle around him with their flashlights and ...>>guns all pointing towards him. Get away. Hide. Childishly, he wishes for his brothers. For Raph’s solid frame to hide behind. For Donnie’s reassuring voice of reason grounding him. For Leo’s confidence to lean on like a pillar in the sea, stopping him from getting pulled under by the waves that threaten to drown him. Terror sweeps over him, because he is alone. ~ What starts out as a late night adventure in the woods beside the farmhouse turns deadly when a group of hunters catch Mikey off guard. The discovery forces a painful conversation that was too long in coming. __________________________________________________________________________ “But Don, why was it taped behind the water filtration system? You coulda just, you know, given it to me. Like, what were the chances I was gonna find it...>> there?” Finally, Donatello’s efforts involving the panel ceased. Mikey thought he heard him give a soft exhale of breath. Don cast aside the wrench and slid his head and shoulders out from under the helicopter’s controls, sitting up fully to face his brother. For the first time in this conversation, he gave the entirety of his attention to Mikey, his eyes focused and worryingly serious. Mikey felt a twitch of concern deep in his belly. “I didn’t want you to find it, Mikey. I hoped you’d never find it.” |

Mental distractions weren't really his thing.
“How do you deal then?” He finds himself asking. He supposes Donnie was somewhat of a veteran in such things, more so than all his other brothers combined. “Well, usually I use math or science. Any kind of long division or equation or formula to keep my brain focused and busy.” His mouth curls around a slight smile. “So yeah. I guess it ...>>is some kind of mental gymnastics in a sense.” And Raph wasn’t the type for making up unnecessary homework in his head when need be. That would always be Donnie’s thing - whether he was here or not to claim it, all those years later and Raph still hadn’t found another alternative that didn’t involve moving or jumping or using his fists. But he looks at Mikey, shifting in his sleep as he tugs at his thin, moth bitten blanket, and feels a solid lump press at the back of his throat, bitter tasting and unshifting. I had three brothers. I lost two. Now I have only one. |
