Merlin stared in silence at the parchment in front of him. It was stupid, really, that one piece of paper could render even the mighty Emrys himself so scared. Well, it was less so the paper itself than what it read.
Not that he knew what it said, however. The unbroken wax seal holding it closed was evidence enough that the boy had not brought himself to read the contents, despite the fact it had sat there for well over a day now.
“You’ve still not opened it then?” the physician assumed, sitting across from his surrogate son at the table. “You can’t leave it there forever, my boy.”
He was right, of course.
“I know.”

Merlin receives a letter with a seal he thought he might never see again, then a second only a few days later. With a little push and support from Gaius, he opens them to discover his kingdom has been reclaimed by the king, his father, meaning he could finally return home after nine years of exile. Merlin leaves with little explanation to Arthur, but when an unfortunate loss means Merlin has to step up to the throne sooner than expected, he invites Arthur to visit the reason he left so suddenly.
