"A story that Exline told the Coens at that pivotal dinner party provided another key plot turn. In about 1986, Exline’s Mazda was stolen. It was later recovered and when he picked it up in a police impound lot, he discovered a damning piece of evidence. Left behind amidst hamburger wrappers was the graded homework of one fourteen-year-old Jaik Freeman— with address included. While a studio exec at Universal, Exline had met “Big” Lew Abernathy, who had some connections to the movie biz (and who paid for film school by moonlighting as a private investigator). They tracked the adolescent down and arrived unannounced at his house.(In a scene reminiscent of the movie, Freeman’s father was in a hospital bed at the time.)
Abernathy made a big show of it, arriving in a suit and dramatically pulling Freeman’s homework, which was sealed in an evidence bag, from his briefcase. Freeman never admitted to any wrongdoing. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Joel recalls hearing the story: “I remember when Pete told us that [homework] story and thinking there was something quintessentially L.A. about it, but L.A. in a very Chandlerian way.”
