She squeaks when he picks her up and throws her over his shoulder like she’s a sack of potatoes, and it’s so unexpected she’s startled into silence. She’s so indignant she can barely do more than make incomprehensible spluttering noises.

When he turns them, seemingly to put her down, she clings to him like a baby wallaby does to its mother.

“Granger, get off,” he says, trying to shake her off, but she obstinately clings to him.
