| “I’m gonna need you to keep him still,” he’s instructing him sternly. Bullets shower over the top of the ditch, landing wetly into the soft mud that surrounds them. Leo pretends not to flinch. “I’m going to cut below the elbow. If he moves and I miss my mark, I don’t want to have to amputate any further up. That’ll… that’ll be harder.” He swallows thickly, everything in his mouth tasting like bloo...>>d, bile and ash. “He’s gonna go into shock,” Leo adds, voice only wavering slightly as he tightens the belt a notch more, all the red hot broken skin below it jumping at the touch. “So just keep him focused, alright? Keep him focused and awake.” Raph is pale, jaw slightly open and his eyes bearing an impossible amount of grief already as he sandwiches his brothers face between his hand, swallows a brave little mouthful of air and tells him, “Mike. Mike, kiddo. This is gonna hurt a little but,” his voice shakes. Rain pelts down hard around them, fat little droplets bouncing off his shell like small pebbles. “But you gotta keep your eyes on me, ‘kay?” He squishes his face tightly, his eyes shaking uselessly in his skull like a pair of marbles. “Just keep your eyes on me, Mikey.” |

| Donnie swallows thickly. His gut is a hard knot. “Father,” he rasps. “When, he. When he wakes, there will be changes.” He tells him. He’s not so sure how much Leo and Raph had filled in for him whilst he was sleeping, but he needs to do this anyway. He needs to say it outloud even if it’s just for himself. “And we shall embrace the change,” his father says with a rumble of his voice, lik...>>e a gentle storm on the horizon. “Like we have always done.” Donnie feels more tears blot at his eyes. That wasn’t the point. He balls his fists tight, pressing his knuckles firmly into his thighs. When he looks at his brother lying there motionless on the cot, his brain does not hesitate to supply him with the horror of last night. Far more frightening than any late night horror movies they watched as kids. “It’s more than that, master,” Donnie tries to gently explain, quelling the growing frustration that bubbles up involuntarily inside of him. “It’s going to take a long time for him to heal. | For a turtle that had such little faith in the afterlife and the beyond and ghosts and ghouls and spirits, Donatello sure does linger a lot. Mikey finds it sad, though he doesn’t ever admit to it out loud. He’ll just find Donnie standing at the edges of the room, like he isn’t sure what to do with himself, hands twisting and feet shuffling and Mikey will watch him and smile and call out to hi...>>m like he’s really actually there. Raph and Leo will often accompany him together, rarely does he ever find them apart which he finds a touch ironic. Two brothers that spent a majority of their time at each other’s throats were now attached at the hip. Mikey finds that nice. He likes that whatever conflict that was always lit between them in life had seemingly fizzled out in the life beyond that. He hopes that wherever it is they are now that they’re okay and that they’re happy. |

Mental distractions weren't really his thing.
“How do you deal then?” He finds himself asking. He supposes Donnie was somewhat of a veteran in such things, more so than all his other brothers combined. “Well, usually I use math or science. Any kind of long division or equation or formula to keep my brain focused and busy.” His mouth curls around a slight smile. “So yeah. I guess it ...>>is some kind of mental gymnastics in a sense.” And Raph wasn’t the type for making up unnecessary homework in his head when need be. That would always be Donnie’s thing - whether he was here or not to claim it, all those years later and Raph still hadn’t found another alternative that didn’t involve moving or jumping or using his fists. But he looks at Mikey, shifting in his sleep as he tugs at his thin, moth bitten blanket, and feels a solid lump press at the back of his throat, bitter tasting and unshifting. I had three brothers. I lost two. Now I have only one. |

She smells so much more better since he found her first. “Sorry you had to be adopted by like, the worst family on earth,” Mikey mutters to her in a small voice. “Maybe Dee was right about you going to a proper home.” Klunk mews, a confused little sound and Mikey sighs. He kisses the top of her head and she purrs, nuzzling into his touch, he manages a weak laugh. “Yeah, I’m gonna be totally selfish, actually. You’re gonna have to put up with me forever I think,” he tells her, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Cos I ain’t giving you up for the world.” Another quick kiss between her ears. “Maybe I could send Raph to the shelter instead, huh?” |
