| Bucky goes into ice, and Steve is left to deal with it while trying to find a new purpose in a world where everything seems to be up in the air. First things first; get his friends free again, and proceed from there. Bucky goes into ice, knowing that when he wakes up everything will be different. It will have been only a blink for him, but for others it will have been months, maybe even years...>>. Still, there is a truth he knows; you have to save yourself. Others can help, but ultimately you have to be the one to do it. He also knows that sometimes what you need to do to save yourself is incompatible with someone else’s needs or wants. Incompatible with their happiness. Steve can’t help but think they keep finding each other only to lose each other only to find each other only to lose each other again, all the while circling around what exactly they mean to each other, never quite looking straight at it. There is another truth that Steve knows; he can’t take it any longer. The cycle must be stopped. |

Here at home he can acknowledge it, can admit that the need to not let Steve out of his sight was all about him, about the need to make sure that Steve was still there, still breathing. And it hasn’t gone away. There was a moment where he had to confront again the truth that he might very well lose Steve one of these days. It’s an old fear, familiar since childhood, but it still stings, still leaves him scrambling in his own brain, trying to find some way to deal with it. At least these days he has more avenues to do so.

In 1991 a five year old Sharon Carter, enthralled by stories of her great aunt, decided she'd become a spy just like her. In 2007 she was assigned her first position within SHIELD. In 2012 Steve Rogers woke up in the future, and pieces started falling into place. James, going by another name by then, woke up one morning and just knew everything had changed. SHIELD soon decided they would have a lot more use for the war hero Captain America than Steve Rogers, a veteran suffering from PTSD. And Sharon had a choice to make. |

Bucky never wanted to fight in a war; he didn’t dream of the glory of the battlefield as a boy. If he had a choice, he’d want to live a normal life in peace that lasted all his life, but it wasn’t to be. *** There is the boredom of the long missions, but there is also camaraderie, joking in the group or just with Steve, sitting quiet around a campfire. Telling an outrageous joke and getting hip-checked so hard by Steve that he ends up falling in the river.
