The first being the poem If by Rudyard Kipling which I received from my parents at a preschool age. The fundamental philosophy of trusting yourself, that all men counted, the importance of filling every unforgiving minute with sixty seconds’ worth of distance running and the lesson of holding on in life I took to heart – to stand on your own two feet and to do your thing. The poem If therefore had a major influence on how I approached and witnessed life, viewed people and developed my own philosophy thereof.
The second being the eight life stages by Erik Erikson as contained in the last page of this book.Erik Homburger Erikson (15 June 1902–12 May 1994) was a German-born American developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst known for his theory on psychosocial development of human beings. He became famous for coining the phrase “identity crisis”. Erikson believed that the ego exists from birth and that behaviour is not totally defensive as were described in his eight life stages. I furthermore decided to map out my life as a “military campaign” in terms of the eight life stages of Erikson – lines of operation, in my terms and of progressing from one firm base to the next".
