He might have miscalculated badly.

He had known that it was a mistake, but this wasn’t the first mistake he made willingly. He had a bad habit of coming up with terrible ideas and making them a reality only because he could. He had a tendency to put his life at risk, not only in the battlefield, but also in alleys, inns and brothels.
